What is it like to work as a researcher? High school student Willemijn Wijckmans visited the Human Interactive Materials (HIM) laboratory to learn for herself. As part of her education, she followed a one-week internship within the HIM group.
During her stay, Willemijn was guided by two researchers from the HIM group, postdoctoral researcher Dongyu Zhang and PhD candidate Anne Verdurmen. Under their supervision, Willemijn was introduced to the world of liquid crystal research. The focus was on the fingerprint texture. The week started with studying the self-assembly of the texture. Using the polarized optical microscope, the team could visualise how a monomer mixture of liquid crystals would form unique textures when repeatedly heated and cooled.
